Farmers in Bauchi State have voiced growing concerns over the soaring cost of fertilisers during the ongoing cropping season. Many of them lamented that the sharp price hikes have made it difficult to cultivate staple crops like maize and rice, forcing a shift to crops that need little or no fertiliser to survive.

In separate interviews with Nigeria TV Info, farmers across various communities in Bauchi explained how the unaffordability of fertilisers is affecting agricultural productivity and could worsen food insecurity nationwide if not urgently addressed.

Some farmers urged the government to implement proactive policies to make fertilisers more accessible and affordable. According to findings from Bauchi Central Market and Muda Lawal Market, fertiliser prices have risen by an estimated 15% since the beginning of the current farming season, further straining the budgets of smallholder farmers who already operate with limited resources.
