Government Meeting with NUPENG, Dangote to Suspend Strike Ends Without Agreement
Abuja, Nigeria – The much-anticipated meeting convened by the Federal Government with the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) and representatives of Dangote Refinery ended late Monday night without reaching any concrete agreement, leaving the threat of nationwide fuel disruption unresolved.
The meeting, which was called to avert the looming industrial action declared by NUPENG, focused on concerns surrounding fuel pricing, supply chain challenges, and allegations of monopolistic practices within the downstream sector. Despite hours of deliberation, parties failed to reach a consensus.
Speaking after the talks, a NUPENG official said the union remained committed to protecting its members and Nigerians from policies that could worsen economic hardship. “We came here with an open mind, but unfortunately no tangible solution was presented. Our demands remain clear and we are waiting for firm commitments,” the source noted.
Representatives of Dangote Refinery reportedly assured stakeholders of their willingness to work with government regulators and marketers but maintained that certain pricing structures were beyond their immediate control.
Meanwhile, government officials expressed optimism that further dialogue could still prevent the strike, even as pressure mounts from labour unions who insist on suspending the planned industrial action only if practical measures are taken.
As uncertainty deepens, Nigerians fear fresh rounds of fuel scarcity, long queues at filling stations, and possible hikes in transportation costs if the strike goes ahead.
