Nigeria Imports 15bn Litres of Petrol Despite Dangote Refinery Output

Despite the operational status of the Dangote Refinery, Nigeria has imported over 15 billion litres of petrol in the past year, highlighting continued reliance on foreign fuel supply. Data from the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) show that the imports were facilitated through the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and major marketers to meet domestic demand amid delays in full-scale output from the Dangote Refinery.

Industry analysts blame infrastructural challenges, regulatory delays, and supply chain constraints for the heavy importation despite local refining efforts. The Dangote Refinery, which began partial operations earlier this year, is expected to reduce imports significantly once it attains full capacity of 650,000 barrels per day.

Stakeholders have urged the government to fast-track licensing and crude supply agreements to maximize the refinery’s potential and reduce Nigeria’s foreign exchange burden.
