NigerSenate Targets March 17 To Pass ₦58.47trn 2026 Appropriation Bill
The Nigerian Senate has set March 17, 2026, as the target date to pass the ₦58.47 trillion 2026 Appropriation Bill, following the adoption of a comprehensive legislative timetable by the Senate Committee on Appropriations.
According to the schedule, Senate standing committees will conduct budget defence sessions with Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) from early February, allowing lawmakers to scrutinise project allocations, revenue assumptions and expenditure priorities. A public hearing has also been slated to enable stakeholders and civil society groups to make input into the budget process.
The Senate leadership explained that the timeline is aimed at ensuring transparency, accountability and thorough review of the estimates before final passage. Lawmakers stressed the need for realistic revenue projections, efficient capital spending and improved funding for critical sectors such as infrastructure, education, healthcare and security.
An interactive session with key economic managers, including the Minister of Finance and the Minister of Budget and National Planning, is expected to address fiscal sustainability, debt servicing concerns and implementation strategies.
If passed on schedule, the budget is expected to support economic growth targets, job creation initiatives and social intervention programmes, while also strengthening macroeconomic stability and boosting investor confidence.
