World Drug Day: Pharmacists, student call for national action against drug abuse

Category: Health |

The Association of Community Pharmacists of Nigeria (ACPN) has called on the Federal Government to implement more robust and prevention-focused policies to curb the alarming rise in drug abuse across the country. Speaking during the 2025 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, ACPN National Chairman, Pharm. Ezeh Ambrose Igwekamma, emphasized the need to shift the national focus from treatment to prevention, echoing the year’s theme: “The Evidence is Clear: Invest in Prevention.” He warned that drug abuse is not only destroying the mental health of young Nigerians but also fueling crime, school dropouts, family breakdowns, and premature deaths—thereby crippling dreams and stalling national development. Supporting this view, Kelvin Ogbodo, a student of Government Secondary School, Garki, Abuja, stressed the urgency of proactive measures, noting that the growing use of illicit substances among students threatens the future of Nigeria’s youth.
