Nigeria TV Info reports:
The Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Akwa Ibom State chapter, Dr. Aniekan Peter, has strongly criticised the Federal Government for what he termed the systematic transformation of Nigerian doctors into modern-day slaves—working under extreme conditions with inadequate remuneration.
Speaking during a press conference in Uyo on Friday, Dr. Peter revealed that medical personnel across the country are being forced to work for over 72 hours without rest, often staying in hospitals without seeing their families, only to receive salaries that can barely sustain a modest livelihood.
According to him, “It may interest you to know that doctors work for 72 hours non-stop. They don’t go home, they don’t know the whereabouts of their children. And at the end of the month, they go home with peanuts—money that cannot provide three square meals, not to mention owning a car or meeting other basic needs.”
He expressed deep disappointment over the recent circular by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission regarding doctors’ allowances, describing it as not only insensitive but also a clear insult to the medical profession.
