The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has called on traditional rulers in Adamawa State and across the North East to take an active role in reducing the alarming number of out-of-school children, especially girls. Speaking during a one-day stakeholders’ meeting held on Tuesday, the Chief Field Officer at the UNICEF Bauchi Field Office, Dr. Nuzhat Rafique, revealed that over 80 million school-age children in Nigeria are currently out of school. She emphasized that the meeting was convened to develop strategies that would guarantee access to quality education for every child in Adamawa and nationwide. Dr. Rafique stressed the key role of traditional rulers, noting they are well positioned to influence communities and encourage parents to recognize the value of education. She also reaffirmed that quality education in a safe and supportive environment is not just a privilege, but a fundamental right of every child.
