As political permutations ahead of the 2027 general elections gather momentum, fresh signals have emerged that some loyalists of former President Goodluck Jonathan, alongside influential chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), are making strong moves to court Labour Party flagbearer in the 2023 polls, Mr. Peter Obi.

Insiders disclosed that a series of behind-the-scenes meetings have been held in Abuja and Yenagoa, with the aim of forging a formidable alliance that could tilt the balance of power against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Key PDP top shots reportedly see Obi as a unifying figure with massive grassroots appeal, especially among youths and urban voters, a constituency that largely propelled his strong showing in the 2023 elections.

Sources revealed that Jonathan’s camp is particularly keen on bridging old cracks within the PDP and repositioning the party for victory. “The idea is to consolidate Obi’s popularity with the South-East and South-South blocs while leveraging PDP’s structure in the North,” a high-ranking party stalwart told reporters.
