Reps Give Transport Minister 48 Hours to Appear Over Train Derailment

Abuja, Nigeria — The House of Representatives Committee on Land Transport has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the Minister of Transportation, Said Ahmed Alkali, to appear before it and give explanations regarding the recent derailment of a Kaduna-bound train that was carrying about 618 passengers.

The committee, during its investigative hearing on the incident, expressed disappointment over the minister’s absence, describing it as an affront to the National Assembly.

Chairman of the committee, Hon. Blessing Onuh, said lawmakers were shocked that the minister chose to ignore the parliament at a time Nigerians are demanding answers about the safety of the nation’s rail system.

“The parliament represents the Nigerian people, and this incident involves the lives and safety of our citizens. We find it unacceptable that the minister has refused to appear before us today,” Onuh stated.

The train derailment, which sparked nationwide concern, has raised questions over the safety of rail infrastructure and the government’s commitment to ensuring reliable transportation.

The committee insisted that the minister must appear within 48 hours to provide a detailed account of what went wrong and the measures being put in place to prevent a recurrence.
