Wike opposes proposed Jonathan's return as president in 2027, gives reason

Former Rivers State governor and current FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, has voiced strong opposition to the speculated return of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan in the 2027 presidential race. Speaking to reporters in Abuja, Wike argued that Nigeria’s democracy should not be reduced to a recycling of past leaders when the nation is in need of fresh ideas and leadership capable of tackling its present challenges.

Wike maintained that while Jonathan made contributions during his tenure, the country has since moved forward and requires a new vision to address insecurity, economic instability, and governance issues. He added that the political class must prioritize grooming younger leaders who can connect with the aspirations of today’s Nigerians.

Wike’s comments come amid rising speculations about Jonathan’s possible candidacy in 2027, with some groups reportedly lobbying for his return. However, the minister insisted that the nation cannot afford what he termed “a step backward in leadership.”

Political analysts say Wike’s stance may widen the cracks within the ruling elite as 2027 approaches, particularly given his history of aligning and clashing with different power blocs.
