Afriland Tower Tragedy: Survivors Recount Horror of Lagos Highrise Inferno

Survivors of the Afriland Tower inferno in Lagos are still shaken after the luxury highrise was engulfed in flames, leaving scores injured and several feared dead. The fire, which broke out late Thursday night, quickly spread through the upper floors, trapping many residents who struggled to escape thick smoke and falling debris.

Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes as alarms blared and families rushed for safety. Some survivors recounted jumping from balconies, while others were rescued by firefighters who battled the blaze for hours amid poor water supply and limited access to the building.

“I thought it was the end,” said a resident who suffered burns while shielding his children. Another survivor described the hallways as “hellish corridors filled with fire and screams.”

Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause, with early reports suggesting an electrical fault. The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed that rescue operations are ongoing, with temporary shelters set up for displaced residents.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has pledged support for victims and ordered a full probe into possible safety violations. The Afriland Tower tragedy has renewed calls for stricter enforcement of fire safety standards in Nigeria’s rapidly growing urban centers.
