Tension Rocks Osun Council as Ataoja, Oluwo Battle for Seniority
Fresh tension has engulfed the Osun State Council of Obas as the Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Oyetunji Olanipekun, and the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrosheed Adewale Akanbi, lock horns over the issue of seniority among traditional rulers.
The dispute, which resurfaced during a recent council meeting, has stirred divisions within the traditional institution, with both monarchs asserting historical claims to higher recognition in the ranking of Osun kingship hierarchy.
While Ataoja maintains that the Osogbo throne holds primacy as the custodian of the state capital’s heritage and history, Oluwo insists that the Iwo monarchy predates many royal stools in the region, thereby deserving senior recognition.
Observers fear the lingering rivalry may polarize the council further, weaken collective decision-making, and affect unity among the traditional rulers at a time when the state faces pressing socio-economic challenges.
Elders and stakeholders have called on Governor Ademola Adeleke to wade into the crisis, stressing the importance of preserving peace, order, and mutual respect among the revered monarchs.
