Flood Disaster: States Intensify Action as 232 Die, 121,000 Displaced

A devastating flood disaster has swept across several Nigerian states, leaving at least 232 people dead and displacing over 121,000 residents, according to emergency management authorities. The tragedy has sparked urgent responses from state governments, who are scaling up rescue, relief, and rehabilitation efforts to curb further casualties.

Authorities disclosed that farmlands, schools, roads, and health facilities have been submerged, worsening food insecurity and disrupting livelihoods in flood-prone regions. States like Kogi, Anambra, Niger, and Adamawa remain the hardest hit.

National and state emergency agencies are collaborating with security operatives, health workers, and humanitarian partners to provide shelter, food supplies, and medical aid to victims. The federal government has also urged communities in flood-prone areas to relocate temporarily to safer zones.

Climate experts warn that persistent heavy rainfall, coupled with poor drainage systems and release of excess water from dams, may continue to fuel the crisis unless long-term mitigation measures are adopted.

Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu has directed relevant agencies to prioritize relief distribution and intensify public awareness campaigns on early warnings and evacuation procedure.
