YouTube Agrees to Pay $24.5 Million to Settle Trump's Lawsuit Over Account Suspension

YouTube has agreed to pay $24.5 million to settle a lawsuit filed by former President Donald Trump after the platform suspended his account following the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot. The settlement includes $22 million to be directed to the Trust for the National Mall, supporting the construction of a new White House State Ballroom—a project championed by Trump. An additional $2.5 million will be distributed among other plaintiffs, including the American Conservative Union and author Naomi Wolf.

This settlement marks the conclusion of a series of legal actions Trump initiated against major tech companies over account suspensions. Earlier this year, Meta (Facebook's parent company) agreed to pay $25 million, and X (formerly Twitter) settled for $10 million. In all cases, the companies did not admit wrongdoing.

Trump's YouTube account was reinstated in 2023. The settlement does not require YouTube to alter its content moderation policies. A representative for Alphabet, YouTube's parent company, declined to comment on the settlement.

Trump has characterized the settlement as a victory for free speech, asserting that it demonstrates the consequences of "Big Tech censorship."
