BREAKING: Nigerian Woman and 8-Month-Old Baby Released from Suleja Prison After Five Months

A Nigerian woman and her 8-month-old daughter have been freed from Suleja Correctional Centre in Niger State after spending over five months in detention. The mother, a tailor, was arrested on March 28, 2025, during a #FreePalestine protest in Abuja. She was charged with unlawful assembly, but following sustained legal efforts, her name was removed from the charge sheet, leading to her release .

The woman's husband, Misbau, confirmed the release and shared images of his wife and daughter after their freedom. He had previously described the traumatic ordeal, explaining that his wife was delivering clothes to a customer near the protest site when the police began arresting individuals, including those wearing hijabs. She was carrying their 3-month-old baby at the time and had no opportunity to escape .

Prior to their release, Misbau had made repeated appeals for justice, highlighting the lack of proper medical care for his wife and child during their imprisonment. He also accused Nigerian authorities of obstructing every attempt at securing their release .

The case has drawn attention to issues of unlawful detention and the treatment of minors in Nigerian prisons. Human rights organizations have raised concerns about the legality of detaining an infant and the conditions under which both mother and child were held. The incident has sparked widespread outrage and calls for accountability within the Nigerian criminal justice system.
