Nigeria TV Info — Lagos Hosts Africa’s First-Ever E1 Electric Powerboat Championship

Lagos, Nigeria — History was made today, October 3, as Lagos became the first African city to host the prestigious E1 Electric Powerboat Championship, with the Lagos GP kicking off on the iconic Lagos Lagoon near Victoria Island. The three-day event runs through October 5 and marks a major milestone for Nigeria and the continent in international water sport competition.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu described the occasion as more than a sporting contest.

The E1 Lagos GP is more than a race, it is a celebration of innovation, sustainability and experience for all. It is Lagos’ story to be passed. Join us at Lagos Races. This is Lagos. This is the E1 Lagos GP,” he declared.

Launched in January 2024, the E1 Series has already staged races in Jeddah, Doha, Venice, and Monaco. Lagos now proudly joins this global roster, cementing Nigeria’s place on the sporting map.

The championship requires every team to include both male and female pilots, showcasing gender balance and inclusivity in international sports. Its commitment to clean technology also aligns with Lagos State’s vision for innovation and sustainability in marine transportation.

Officials have cautioned Lagos residents to expect traffic disruptions along Ozumba Mbadiwe and the Lekki axis, as road diversions have been announced to ease congestion during the event.

Beyond the races, the championship is projected to boost tourism and economic activity, attracting thousands of visitors while highlighting Lagos as both Africa’s cultural heartbeat and economic powerhouse.

Organisers and state officials agree: the E1 Lagos GP is a bold statement of energy, culture, and possibility—with Lagos leading Africa into the future of sustainable water sport.
