Cameroon’s Paul Biya Secures 8th Term with 53% of Votes Amid Opposition Protests

Cameroon’s long-serving President, Paul Biya, has been re-elected for an unprecedented eighth term in office after securing 53.2% of the vote, according to official results announced by the country’s electoral commission, ELECAM. The 92-year-old leader, who has ruled since 1982, defeated his closest rival, Maurice Kamto of the MRC party, who garnered about 35%.

The announcement sparked mixed reactions across the country — jubilation from Biya’s supporters in Yaoundé and Douala, and protests from opposition groups alleging widespread electoral irregularities. Kamto rejected the results, calling for an independent audit of the election process.

International observers from the African Union and other bodies reported low voter turnout in some conflict-hit regions of the English-speaking northwest and southwest, citing security challenges and voter intimidation.

Despite growing calls for political reform and generational change, Biya pledged to maintain stability and strengthen national unity, vowing that “Cameroon will remain peaceful and prosperous under my continued leadership.”

Biya’s victory extends his 43-year reign, making him one of the world’s longest-serving heads of state.
