92-Year-Old Biya’s Eighth Term Victory Sparks Protests Across Cameroon

Widespread protests have erupted across major cities in Cameroon following the re-election of 92-year-old President Paul Biya for an unprecedented eighth term in office. The veteran leader, who has ruled since 1982, secured over 53% of the votes according to official results released by the electoral commission. Opposition groups, however, have rejected the outcome, alleging massive irregularities, voter intimidation, and ballot manipulation.

In the capital, Yaoundé, and the commercial hub, Douala, demonstrators clashed with security forces who fired tear gas to disperse crowds demanding Biya’s resignation. Several arrests were made as human rights groups voiced concern over escalating tensions and potential abuses.
