Cameroon Opposition Leader Faces Legal Action Over Post-Election Unrest – Government

The Cameroonian government has announced plans to take legal action against opposition leader Maurice Kamto following widespread unrest that erupted after the recent presidential election. According to Information Minister Rene Emmanuel Sadi, Kamto and several members of his Cameroon Renaissance Movement (CRM) incited protests challenging the re-election of 92-year-old President Paul Biya for an eighth term.

Authorities said the demonstrations, which began peacefully in Yaoundé and Douala, later turned violent, leading to property damage, injuries, and dozens of arrests. The government accused Kamto of spreading false claims of electoral fraud and undermining national stability.

Kamto’s supporters insist that the charges are politically motivated, alleging that the vote was marred by irregularities and intimidation. International observers have urged restraint from both sides, calling for transparency and dialogue to ease rising political tensions.

The Justice Ministry confirmed that investigations into the unrest are ongoing and that those found culpable will be prosecuted in accordance with Cameroonian law.
