CPC Blacklist: 12 Nigerian Governors, Top Officials Risk US Sanctions Over Corruption, Rights Abuses
The United States Congressional Policy Committee (CPC) has reportedly placed 12 Nigerian state governors and several senior government officials on a potential blacklist, signalling possible sanctions over alleged corruption, human rights abuses, and electoral malpractice.
According to diplomatic sources in Washington, the move follows months of investigations into financial misconduct, misuse of public funds, and the suppression of civil liberties. The affected officials are said to include individuals from both ruling and opposition parties, with some accused of stifling media freedom and intimidating political opponents.
If the sanctions are approved, the individuals may face travel bans, asset freezes, and restrictions on international business transactions. A CPC spokesperson said the blacklist aims to âhold accountable those undermining democratic governance and transparency in Nigeria.â
Nigeriaâs Ministry of Foreign Affairs has yet to issue an official response, though insiders suggest quiet diplomatic engagements are underway to prevent further escalation.
The development comes amid growing global pressure on Nigerian leaders to uphold democratic principles and curb corruption within the public sector.
