Governor Douye Diri Defects to APC, Says Move Is in Bayelsa’s Best Interest

Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has officially joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) in a surprise political shift that has stirred reactions across the state and beyond. Diri, who was elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), announced his defection during a ceremony held at the Government House, Yenagoa, on Monday, with top APC leaders, including former Governor Timipre Sylva and Senate President Godswill Akpabio, in attendance.

In his speech, Diri said the decision was driven by his commitment to the “collective interest and development of Bayelsa State,” adding that politics should be about service, not party affiliation. “I am moving to the APC to ensure Bayelsa does not remain in isolation from the federal structure. My goal is to bring more projects, opportunities, and peace to our people,” he said.

APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, welcomed Diri, describing his defection as a “strategic and courageous step” that will strengthen the party’s base in the South-South region. Ganduje also assured the governor of the party’s full support in his ongoing developmental projects.

Political analysts have described the defection as a major boost for the APC ahead of the 2027 elections, as it gains a sitting governor from the opposition. Meanwhile, the PDP leadership in Bayelsa has expressed shock and disappointment, calling the move a betrayal of the party’s mandate.
