Nollywood Actor Baba Ijesha Released After Appeal Court Overturns Conviction

Nigerian actor Olanrewaju Omiyinka, popularly known as Baba Ijesha, was released from prison on November 14, 2025, after spending over three years behind bars. His freedom follows a ruling by an Appeal Court, which overturned his prior 16-year sentence. The actor was originally convicted in July 2022 by a Lagos State High Court on charges of sexually assaulting a minor.

His friend and fellow actor, Yomi Fabiyi, shared the news on Instagram, writing, “You are now officially FREE AND OUT. Baba Ijesha is not just back but BETTER.” Fabiyi further stated that the Appeal Court cleared Ijesha of “ever having sex/defile any child/minor,” calling the original seven-year-old story “a charade.”

Baba Ijesha’s case has been highly controversial: he was arrested in April 2021 on a six-count charge, including sexual assault. At his 2022 trial, he was sentenced to 16 years, though because some terms were to run concurrently, he was expected to serve a maximum of five years.

As of now, independent court records confirming the Appeal Court decision have not been made publicly available, and several outlets note that efforts to verify the ruling are still underway.
