Fifty pupils escape after mass abduction at Nigerian Catholic school
On Friday, gunmen raided St Maryâs Catholic School in Papiri, Niger State, north-central Nigeria, kidnapping 303 students and 12 staff. Over the weekend, 50 of the abducted children escaped and were reunited with their families. Approximately 253 children and the 12 teachers remain held by the kidnappers, according to the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN). The school is located in a remote forest-edge region where armed gangs operate, complicating rescue efforts. The incident has sparked global and domestic outcry, with Pope Leo XIV calling for the immediate release of all hostages and Nigeriaâs Bola Tinubu pledging intensified security action. Meanwhile, in response to rising school kidnappings across the region, authorities have shut dozens of schools and deployed additional police to vulnerable areas.
