Italy Recognises Femicide as Crime, Introduces Life Imprisonment

In a landmark move to combat violence against women, Italy has officially recognised femicide as a distinct criminal offence. The Italian Parliament approved a new law on Tuesday, introducing life imprisonment for individuals convicted of killing women based on their gender.

The vote in the Lower Chamber coincided with the UN-designated International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. The bill received overwhelming bipartisan support, with 237 lawmakers from both the center-right majority and center-left opposition voting in favor.

Backed by the conservative government of Premier Giorgia Meloni, the legislation comes in response to a rising wave of killings and gender-based attacks that have shocked the nation. In addition to harsher penalties for femicide, the law also strengthens protections against stalking and the non-consensual sharing of intimate images, commonly referred to as revenge porn.

This historic step signals Italy’s commitment to addressing gender-based violence and protecting women across the country.
