Venezuela Says 100 Dead in U.S. Attack That Ousted Maduro
Caracas, Venezuela â Venezuelaâs Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello announced late Wednesday that 100 people were killed in the U.S. military operation that removed President NicolĂĄs Maduro from power on Saturday. This is the first official figure released by Venezuelan authorities.
Cabello claimed that many of those killed were part of Maduroâs security forces who were killed âin cold blood,â and noted that previous local counts had only identified 23 Venezuelan soldiers among the dead. Cubaâs government has reported that 32 of its military and intelligence personnel stationed in Venezuela were also killed during the raid.
Both Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were injured during the operation, with Maduro suffering a leg injury and Flores a head injury, Cabello said. Following the high-risk mission, which included airstrikes and a ground assault in Caracas, the couple were taken to New York, where they appeared in federal court on Monday.
Acting President Delcy RodrĂguez has declared a seven-day national mourning period to honor those killed, while Venezuelan military funerals for slain officers have been held in Caracas. The government has also launched investigations into the casualties, with the Attorney General calling the U.S. action a war crime.
The U.S. says the raid was aimed at capturing Maduro under charges including drug trafficking and restoring democracy in Venezuela, though international responses have been mixed and concerns about civilian harm and sovereignty violations are growing.
