EU Warns US Takeover of Greenland Would Signal End of NATO
Brussels â The European Union has said it could help provide security for Greenland if Denmark formally requested assistance, as tensions rise over remarks by former U.S. President Donald Trump suggesting American control of the Arctic island.
Speaking on Monday, the European Commissioner for Defence and Space warned that any unilateral U.S. military takeover of Greenland would effectively mark the end of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), stressing that such an action would undermine the allianceâs core principles of collective security and mutual respect among member states.
Trump has repeatedly argued that the United States must âownâ Greenland, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, citing concerns that Russia or China could move to dominate the strategically located, mineral-rich region. He has also claimed that the current U.S. military presence on the island is insufficient to guarantee long-term security in the Arctic.
Greenland occupies a critical position in the Arctic, a region increasingly shaped by geopolitical competition, climate change, and access to natural resources. The island already hosts a U.S. military base, operated under long-standing defence agreements with Denmark.
Denmark and the United States â both NATO allies â are expected to hold talks this week focused on Greenlandâs security and broader Arctic cooperation. However, both Copenhagen and the Greenlandic authorities have firmly stated that the territory is not for sale and that its future will be decided by its people.
Despite these assurances, Trump has refused to rule out the use of force, a stance that has alarmed European leaders and raised fresh questions about unity within NATO at a time of heightened global uncertainty.
EU officials say any security challenges in Greenland should be addressed through dialogue, international law, and alliance-based cooperation, rather than unilateral action.
