Atiku Warns Supporters Against Attacks on Peter Obi, Calls for Opposition Unity
Abuja — Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has cautioned his supporters to desist from verbal attacks against Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, warning that such actions weaken opposition unity and do not serve the interests of Nigeria or its people.
Atiku gave the warning on Tuesday via a post on X (formerly Twitter), reacting to rising online exchanges and disagreements among supporters of opposition leaders. He stressed that internal divisions within the opposition camp only play into the hands of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
“Anyone who insults Obi or Atiku does not mean well for the leaders, the coalition ADC, and for Nigeria and Nigerians,” Atiku stated, urging restraint and mutual respect among supporters.
The former vice president’s call for unity comes amid ongoing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general election and discussions around a possible opposition coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Meanwhile, the APC Committee on Strategy, Conflict Resolution, and Mobilisation has assured that it will adopt proactive measures to address existing and potential internal threats within the ruling party. The committee, chaired by Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni, gave the assurance on Monday night in Abuja during its inaugural meeting.
In a related development, the Convener of the League of Northern Democrats, Umar Ardo, said on Tuesday that Peter Obi would not stand a chance of securing the ADC presidential ticket for 2027 unless Atiku stepped down.
However, Atiku maintained that infighting and public attacks among opposition figures only weaken their collective strength, emphasizing that unity remains crucial for presenting a credible alternative to the ruling party.
