Credibility of 2027 Elections at Stake — Atiku Urges Senate to Fast-Track Electoral Act Amendment

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has warned that the credibility of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections is under serious threat unless urgent reforms are carried out. Speaking through his media office on Monday, Atiku called on the Senate and the National Assembly to prioritise amendments to the Electoral Act, particularly areas affecting electronic transmission of results, voter accreditation, and the independence of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Atiku stressed that public confidence in the electoral process has been weakened by past irregularities, logistical challenges, and disputes over result management. He noted that strengthening the legal framework ahead of the next election cycle would help reduce post-election litigation and promote transparency.

The former presidential candidate also urged lawmakers to engage civil society organisations, political parties, and election observers in the amendment process to ensure broad consensus. According to him, timely legislative action will demonstrate the government’s commitment to democratic principles and fair competition.

He further appealed to the executive arm to support the proposed reforms, warning that delays could undermine national stability and democratic progress. Atiku reaffirmed his commitment to peaceful, credible, and inclusive elections, calling on Nigerians to remain vigilant and actively participate in safeguarding democracy.
