Alaafin, Soun Absent as Makinde Launches Oyo State 50th Anniversary Celebrations
Ibadan â Oyo State officially kicked off its week-long 50th anniversary celebrations on Monday at the International Conference Centre, Ibadan. Governor Seyi Makinde led the ceremony, cutting the anniversary cake and urging residents to reflect on the stateâs achievements and envision the next 50 years.
The event was attended by political leaders, former governorsâ families, and key traditional rulers, including the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, who is also chairman of the Oyo Council of Obas. However, the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade, and the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Olaoye Ghandi, were notably absent.
Sources indicate their absence is linked to the recent restructuring of the Oyo State Council of Obas. Governor Makinde replaced the Alaafinâs permanent chairmanship with a rotational system among the Alaafin, Olubadan, and Soun. While the government claims consultations were held, the Alaafin reportedly denied participating in or approving the decision, heightening tensions between the state and traditional institutions.
Governor Makinde described the golden jubilee as a moment for unity, progress, and reflection, emphasizing plans to boost the stateâs economy and improve opportunities for residents. Despite the absence of two prominent monarchs, the celebration proceeded with cultural displays, speeches, and events honoring Oyo Stateâs 50-year journey.
