Israel Says Killing of Iran’s Khamenei Complied With Laws of War

Israel has defended the killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, insisting the strike that ended his life complied with international laws governing armed conflict. Israeli officials argued that Khamenei was a legitimate military target because he served as the commander-in-chief of Iran’s armed forces and was responsible for directing military operations against Israel.

Israel’s Justification

According to Israeli military spokesman Nadav Shoshani, the operation was conducted within the framework of international humanitarian law. He explained that leaders who command armed forces during wartime can legally be targeted if they play an active role in directing hostilities.

Shoshani said Khamenei was the “final decision-maker” behind Iran’s military strategy and had authorized attacks against Israel as well as the funding and coordination of allied militant groups across the region. Israeli officials believe eliminating him weakened Iran’s ability to plan and coordinate attacks against Israeli targets.

Strike That Triggered Wider Conflict

The strike occurred during a major escalation in the Middle East after joint United States and Israeli attacks on Iranian military and nuclear-related sites. The operation targeted key facilities in Tehran and other strategic locations, resulting in the death of Khamenei and several senior Iranian figures.

Iranian media reported that members of Khamenei’s family—including his wife, son-in-law, and two grandchildren—also died in the strike, further intensifying outrage inside the country.

Iran’s Retaliation

Following the assassination, Iran launched waves of missile and drone strikes targeting Israel and American military positions across the Middle East. Attacks were reported in several Gulf states and against U.S. bases in the region, raising fears of a wider regional war.

Global Reactions

The killing has triggered sharp international reactions. While Israel maintains the strike was lawful under the laws of war, several countries and international observers have condemned it. Critics argue the assassination of a head of state risks violating international law and could escalate tensions further in the already volatile Middle East.

Uncertain Future

Khamenei’s death has created political uncertainty in Iran, where authorities are working to maintain stability while continuing military operations against Israel and its allies. Analysts warn that the incident could reshape power dynamics in the region and prolong the conflict between Iran and Israel.
