Bala Mohammed Set to Defect to APC Tomorrow

Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, is reportedly set to defect from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in a move expected to further reshape Nigeria’s political landscape.

According to emerging reports, the defection ceremony is expected to take place on Tuesday after a series of negotiations between the Bauchi governor and leaders of the APC at the national level. Sources familiar with the discussions revealed that Mohammed had earlier held meetings with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other top figures within the ruling party to finalise the terms of his planned switch.

Political insiders disclosed that part of the negotiation includes an agreement that could see Mohammed receive the APC senatorial ticket in the next electoral cycle. However, reports also indicate that he may not have full control over the party structure in Bauchi State as part of the conditions attached to the move.

If the defection goes ahead as planned, it will mark another major blow to the PDP, where Mohammed currently serves as chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum. Analysts say the move could significantly weaken the opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections while strengthening the ruling APC’s dominance across the country.

Political observers believe the development reflects ongoing internal crises within the PDP and the growing trend of defections by prominent politicians to the APC. The expected switch by the Bauchi governor may also trigger further realignments among opposition figures as the political atmosphere gradually heats up toward the next national elections.

Should the move be completed, the number of governors under the APC is expected to increase further, leaving only a few states under opposition parties.
