World Water Day: Tinubu Advocates Gender Equality in Access to Water

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called for increased gender equality in access to clean and safe water resources across Nigeria, emphasizing the critical role women and girls play in water collection and management.

In a statement marking the global observance of World Water Day, the President highlighted the disproportionate burden faced by women in rural and underserved communities, where they often travel long distances to fetch water. He stressed that equitable access to water is not only a basic human right but also essential for social and economic development.

Tinubu urged policymakers, development partners, and stakeholders to prioritize inclusive water policies that empower women, improve sanitation infrastructure, and ensure sustainable water supply systems nationwide. He noted that bridging the gender gap in water access would enhance health outcomes, boost education for girls, and strengthen community resilience.

The President also reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 6, which focuses on clean water and sanitation for all.

Stakeholders in the water sector have welcomed the call, urging swift implementation of policies that address systemic inequalities and ensure that no group is left behind in accessing this vital resource.
