El‑Rufai’s Estranged Allies, Others Close Ranks at Mother’s Final Funeral Rites
A rare moment of political unity unfolded on Sunday, 29 March 2026, as former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El‑Rufai laid his mother, Hajiya Umma El‑Rufai, to rest in Abuja. Prominent political figures from across Nigeria’s fractious political landscape set aside deep‑seated differences to honour the late matriarch, whose remains arrived from Cairo, Egypt after her death following a brief illness.
The funeral rites began with the janazah (Islamic funeral) prayer at the National Mosque, Abuja, followed by burial at Gudu Cemetery. Among the dignitaries were estranged allies and past political rivals of El‑Rufai.
Notable attendees included former Vice‑President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party presidential aspirant Peter Obi, and National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu—who previously had a strained political relationship with El‑Rufai—alongside Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani.
The gathering also featured leaders from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), several state governors, traditional rulers, and business leaders, illustrating the deep respect commanded by the late Hajiya Umma.
During the burial, the former Minister Isa Pantami urged unity and reflection, reminding mourners of the shared humanity that transcends political rivalries.
The event came amid continuing political tensions surrounding El‑Rufai, who was temporarily released from custody to attend the rites of his mother, as he faces legal challenges related to corruption allegations.
