2027: Shekarau, Gwarzo Announce Defection to Ruling APC, Trigger Major Political Realignment in Kano

Former Kano State Governor, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, and former Senator Bello Hayatu Gwarzo have officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), in a move already reshaping political calculations ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The announcement was made on Sunday at Shekarau’s residence in Kano, where the two political heavyweights were joined by supporters and party loyalists. The gathering reportedly ended with unanimous endorsement of their decision after consultations with political associates and stakeholders.

Shekarau, a former governor and ex-Minister of Education, said the move followed extensive reflection on Nigeria’s evolving political landscape and the need for a stronger platform for engagement. Gwarzo aligned with the decision, describing it as necessary for effective political participation in the current climate.

The development comes after weeks of speculation and intensified visits by APC national leaders seeking to woo key opposition figures back into the ruling party. Political observers say the defections mark one of the most significant shifts in Kano’s political structure in recent years, given the state’s decisive influence in national elections.

APC leaders have welcomed the development, describing it as a major boost to the party’s grassroots strength in Northern Nigeria as preparations gradually build toward 2027.

Analysts, however, note that while the move strengthens APC’s visibility, Kano’s political environment remains highly competitive and fluid, with voter sentiment and local alliances still expected to play a decisive role.
