Akpabio Faults South Africa Over Attacks on Nigerians
President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has criticised the South African government over what he described as inadequate action against repeated attacks on Nigerians living in the country.
Akpabio expressed concern during a meeting with officials and stakeholders, stating that despite several diplomatic engagements and assurances from South African authorities, Nigerians in the country continue to face harassment, xenophobic violence, and discrimination.
According to him, Nigeria has consistently maintained cordial relations with South Africa and played a significant role in the anti-apartheid struggle, making the continued attacks on Nigerians unacceptable. He stressed that both countries must strengthen cooperation to ensure the protection of lives and property of foreign nationals.
âWe are not seeing enough action from the South African authorities concerning these attacks on Nigerians,â Akpabio said, urging stronger law enforcement measures and speedy prosecution of perpetrators involved in xenophobic violence.
The Senate President also called on the Nigerian government to intensify diplomatic pressure and continue engaging South African authorities to guarantee the safety of Nigerian citizens residing in the country.
Over the years, relations between Nigeria and South Africa have occasionally been strained due to repeated incidents of attacks on foreign nationals, especially Nigerians, leading to protests and diplomatic interventions between both nations.
