Dangote Breaks Ground on 700,000-bpd Second Crude Processing Unit

Dangote Group has officially commenced construction of a new 700,000-barrels-per-day (bpd) crude processing unit, marking a major expansion of its downstream oil operations in Nigeria. The project is expected to significantly boost domestic refining capacity and reduce reliance on imported petroleum products.

According to project updates, the second processing unit will be integrated into the existing refining complex, enhancing output efficiency across gasoline, diesel, aviation fuel, and other petrochemical products. Industry analysts say the expansion positions the refinery among the largest single-site refining hubs globally.

The initiative is also expected to strengthen Nigeria’s energy security, create thousands of direct and indirect jobs, and stimulate growth in related sectors such as logistics, shipping, and petrochemicals. Construction activities are already underway, with engineering teams mobilized on-site.

Energy stakeholders have described the development as a strategic step toward achieving fuel self-sufficiency in West Africa, while also potentially improving foreign exchange stability by reducing fuel import bills.
