The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called for caution amid growing demands for statewide strikes and mass protests following the abduction of teachers and pupils in Oyo State. The student body warned that such actions could worsen the security situation and unintentionally aid the objectives of criminal groups.
In a statement issued by its National President, Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, NANS described the abduction as a tragic and heartbreaking incident that has deeply affected students, parents, and communities across the country. The association stressed that efforts should remain focused on securing the safe return of the victims rather than disrupting economic and social activities through strikes.
According to NANS, while citizens have the constitutional right to protest, such rights should be exercised responsibly during sensitive security situations. The group argued that mass shutdowns and strikes could create further instability and potentially serve the interests of kidnappers seeking to spread fear and panic.
The association also called for national unity and collective responsibility in tackling insecurity, urging Nigerians to support ongoing rescue efforts by security agencies. NANS expressed confidence that the abducted pupils and teachers would be rescued and safely reunited with their families.
The Oyo school abduction has sparked nationwide concern following coordinated attacks on schools in Oriire Local Government Area, where dozens of students and teachers were reportedly kidnapped. The incident has intensified public debate about school safety and the broader security challenges facing Nigeria's education sector.
As authorities continue rescue operations, stakeholders across the country have renewed calls for stronger security measures to protect schools, teachers, and students from future attacks.
