Nigeria TV Info Poor Leadership: Peter Obi Condemns Tinubu’s Recruitment of 1,000 Forest Guards in Oyo

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has criticised President Bola Tinubu’s approval of the recruitment of 1,000 forest guards in Oyo State, describing the move as a sign of “poor leadership” and a reactive rather than strategic response to Nigeria’s worsening insecurity.

In a statement shared via his official communication channels, Obi argued that the decision reflects a pattern of governance that addresses security challenges only after crises occur, rather than through long-term planning and prevention.

He noted that the approval, following recent abductions in parts of Oyo State, shows what he described as a lack of holistic security strategy, questioning whether similar emergency recruitments would be repeated across all states and what impact such actions would have on existing regional security structures.

Obi further warned that Nigeria’s insecurity problem requires a coordinated national framework involving intelligence, prevention, and strengthened institutions, rather than what he termed “reactive deployments” of personnel after incidents have already occurred.

The Federal Government had earlier approved the recruitment of forest guards in collaboration with the Oyo State Government as part of efforts to improve security in forested and vulnerable areas of the state.

The comments have since generated political reactions, with supporters and critics divided over whether the initiative represents a practical security response or an inadequate stopgap measure.
