Abductors of Oyo pupils, teachers reportedly demand ₦1bn ransom, Sharia law implementation

Armed abductors holding pupils and teachers kidnapped from schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State are reportedly demanding a ₦1 billion ransom and additional political conditions before releasing the victims.

According to security and community reports, the kidnappers have also insisted on the implementation of Sharia law in the state, alongside cash payment, vehicles, food supplies, and the release of detained suspects allegedly linked to their network.

The development marks a troubling escalation in the case, which initially involved mass abduction of pupils and teachers during coordinated attacks on schools in mid-May 2026. The abductors are said to be communicating through intermediaries while negotiations remain tense and uncertain.

Authorities have continued rescue operations, while government officials and security agencies face pressure from families and residents demanding urgent action to secure the safe return of the victims. The incident has further intensified concerns over rising insecurity targeting schools in southwestern Nigeria.

Security analysts warn that the mix of financial and ideological demands could complicate negotiations and prolong the captivity of the abducted pupils and teachers.
