FG Condemns Anti-African Sentiment, Says Retaliation Against South Africa ‘Not Off The Table’
The Federal Government of Nigeria has strongly condemned what it described as rising anti-African sentiment in parts of the continent, warning that diplomatic and economic retaliation against South Africa is “not off the table” if hostile attitudes persist.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nigeria expressed concern over increasing reports of discrimination and xenophobic tendencies affecting African nationals in South Africa. The government emphasized that such actions undermine the spirit of African unity, regional integration, and the objectives of the African Union.
Officials noted that Nigeria remains committed to peaceful diplomacy but will not hesitate to respond firmly if Nigerian citizens and other Africans continue to face hostility abroad. The statement called for urgent engagement between Abuja and Pretoria to address grievances and strengthen bilateral relations.
The FG also urged South African authorities to ensure the protection of foreign nationals and uphold international human rights standards. It stressed that Africa must remain united in promoting trade, migration cooperation, and regional stability rather than division.
Diplomatic observers say the remarks reflect growing frustration within ECOWAS circles over recurring xenophobic incidents and strained migration policies in some African countries.
Nigeria reiterated its preference for dialogue but maintained that all options remain open should tensions escalate further.
