Senate Orders Arrest of Ex-NNPC Boss Mele Kyari Over N210 Trillion Financial Query

The Nigerian Senate has reportedly ordered the arrest of former Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (Mele Kyari) over alleged failure to respond satisfactorily to a staggering N210 trillion financial query linked to the oil sector.

According to legislative sources, the decision followed repeated invitations extended to Kyari to clarify discrepancies raised during ongoing investigations into crude oil revenues, subsidy-related transactions, and remittance records spanning several fiscal years. Lawmakers expressed concern over what they described as “unreconciled and opaque figures” in NNPC’s financial disclosures during his tenure.

The Senate Committee on Petroleum Resources reportedly escalated the matter after Kyari failed to appear for further questioning, prompting the upper chamber to direct relevant security agencies to ensure his appearance before investigators.

The Senate leadership maintained that the inquiry is part of broader efforts to enforce accountability in the management of Nigeria’s oil revenues, insisting that no individual would be exempt from scrutiny, regardless of former position or influence.

The National Assembly has reiterated its commitment to transparency, stating that the ongoing probe is aimed at safeguarding public funds and restoring confidence in the country’s petroleum governance system.
