DSS, Army Foil Alleged Plot to Abduct WAEC Candidates in South-East

Security operatives from the Department of State Services (Department of State Services) and the Nigerian Army (Nigerian Army) have reportedly foiled a planned abduction attempt targeting candidates sitting for the West African Examinations Council exams (WAEC) in parts of Nigeria’s South-East region (Southeastern Nigeria).

According to preliminary security briefings, intelligence reports indicated that armed groups were mobilising to disrupt ongoing examinations by abducting students from selected examination centres. Acting swiftly on the intelligence, joint operatives intensified surveillance across suspected flashpoints, leading to the disruption of the alleged plan before it could be executed.

Security sources disclosed that coordinated patrols were deployed around schools and examination venues, while undercover operatives monitored movement routes commonly used by students and invigilators. This proactive response is said to have forced the suspected attackers to abandon their positions and disperse.

Authorities have since reassured parents, school administrators, and candidates that all WAEC examination centres in the region remain under tight security. They also emphasized that additional tactical units have been stationed in vulnerable communities to prevent any resurgence of similar threats.

The development highlights ongoing concerns over school safety in parts of the country, where criminal groups have previously targeted educational institutions. Security agencies say efforts are being intensified to ensure uninterrupted academic activities and safeguard students nationwide.
