Insecurity: Oba of Benin Summons Native Doctors, Priests, Others Over Rising Security Concerns
The Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, has summoned native doctors, traditional priests, herbalists, and other custodians of traditional religious practices across Benin Kingdom as part of efforts to address growing insecurity and criminal activities in the area.
The royal directive comes amid increasing concerns over incidents of kidnapping, armed robbery, cult-related violence, and other criminal acts affecting communities within Edo State. The monarch expressed concern that some individuals allegedly misuse traditional practices to aid criminal activities, thereby tarnishing the reputation of the kingdom's cultural heritage.
During the gathering at the royal palace in Benin City, the Oba reportedly warned practitioners against providing spiritual protection, charms, or assistance to criminals. He emphasized that traditional institutions must play a positive role in promoting peace, justice, and security within society.
The monarch further called on community leaders, youth groups, and security agencies to collaborate in identifying and exposing individuals who exploit traditional practices for unlawful purposes. He stressed that preserving the integrity of Benin customs and traditions remains a collective responsibility.
Observers say the move highlights the growing involvement of traditional rulers in supporting efforts to combat insecurity and strengthen community-based approaches to crime prevention. Residents have welcomed the initiative, expressing hope that it will help discourage criminal elements and contribute to restoring peace across affected communities.
Security stakeholders have also noted that traditional institutions remain influential in local communities and can serve as important partners in intelligence gathering, conflict resolution, and public awareness campaigns aimed at tackling insecurity.
