At least 13 people have been confirmed dead and 66 others injured following a massive explosion at Qatar’s Ras Laffan Industrial City, home to the world's largest liquefied natural gas (LNG) export complex. Qatari authorities said the blast occurred at the Barzan gas processing facility during efforts to restart operations after a prolonged shutdown.
According to Qatar's Energy Minister, Saad al-Kaabi, the explosion was caused by a technical accident and not by sabotage or any hostile action. Emergency response teams quickly contained the resulting fire, while investigations into the exact cause remain ongoing.
Officials reported that none of the injured victims are in life-threatening condition. The incident is considered one of the deadliest gas industry accidents in more than two decades and has raised concerns about energy infrastructure safety in the Gulf region.
Despite the severity of the explosion, QatarEnergy has assured global markets that LNG exports will continue uninterrupted and that there is no threat to public safety or the environment. The Ras Laffan complex is responsible for a significant share of the world's LNG supply, making it a critical hub for international energy markets.
Authorities have launched a full investigation into the incident as recovery efforts continue at the facility.
