Nigeria TV Info BREAKING: Tinubu Sends State Police Amendment Bill to Senate

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has transmitted the Constitution Alteration State Police Bill, 2026 to the Senate, marking a major step toward establishing state police services across Nigeria as part of efforts to strengthen the nation's security architecture.

The communication, dated June 15, 2026, was read during Tuesday's plenary by Senate President Godswill Akpabio. The proposed legislation seeks to amend the 1999 Constitution to create a legal framework for a dual policing system, allowing states to establish and operate their own police services alongside the Nigeria Police Force.

According to President Tinubu, the reform is intended to improve grassroots security, enhance community policing, and enable faster responses to local security challenges. The proposal also envisions greater participation by communities, municipalities, and local governments in maintaining public safety.

Following its presentation, the Senate referred the bill to its Committee on Constitution Review for further legislative consideration and a report back to the chamber. If approved by the National Assembly and endorsed by at least two-thirds of the 36 State Houses of Assembly before receiving presidential assent, the amendment would pave the way for the creation of state police forces across the country.
