Hardship: Civil Servants Demand 400% Wage Increase Amid Rising Cost of Living
Labour unions representing civil servants across Nigeria have called for a 400 percent increase in workers' salaries, citing the worsening economic hardship and the continuous rise in the cost of living. The demand comes as inflation, transportation costs, food prices, housing expenses, and utility bills continue to put pressure on workers' incomes.
Union leaders argued that the current wage structure is no longer sufficient to meet the basic needs of civil servants and their families. They stressed that many workers are struggling to afford essential commodities despite recent government interventions aimed at cushioning the effects of economic reforms.
According to the unions, a substantial salary review has become necessary to restore workers' purchasing power and improve their standard of living. They urged the federal and state governments to begin immediate negotiations and implement a new wage structure that reflects the country's current economic realities.
Economic analysts, however, cautioned that while a significant wage increase could improve workers' welfare, it may also place additional pressure on government finances if not accompanied by increased productivity and revenue generation. They called for a balanced approach that protects workers while ensuring fiscal sustainability.
The government is yet to issue an official response to the demand, but labour leaders insist they will continue to engage relevant authorities until a satisfactory agreement is reached.
