State Police Will Protect Persecuted Nigerian Christians – US Lawmaker

A United States lawmaker has expressed support for Nigeria’s proposed state police system, arguing that it could provide better protection for vulnerable communities, particularly Christians facing attacks in parts of the country. The lawmaker stated that localized policing would enable faster responses to security threats, improve intelligence gathering, and strengthen accountability at the grassroots level.

The remarks come amid growing debate over the recent passage of the state police bill by Nigeria’s Senate. Supporters of the initiative believe that decentralizing policing powers will help states tackle insecurity, banditry, kidnapping, communal clashes, and religiously motivated violence more effectively than the current centralized structure.

According to the US legislator, state-controlled police forces would be better positioned to understand local security challenges and respond promptly to threats against communities. He emphasized that improved security arrangements could help protect religious freedom and reduce attacks targeting Christians and other vulnerable groups.

However, critics of state policing have raised concerns about possible political interference, abuse of power by state governments, and the risk of using police forces against political opponents. Advocates of the reform insist that strong constitutional safeguards, oversight mechanisms, and accountability measures can address such concerns.

The discussion over state police remains a major national issue as lawmakers, security experts, religious leaders, and civil society groups continue to debate the best approach to addressing Nigeria’s persistent security challenges.
