JAMB Defends 16-Year Admission Age, Cites Maturity and Existing Laws
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has reaffirmed its support for maintaining 16 years as the minimum age for admission into tertiary institutions across Nigeria, stating that the policy is based on legal provisions, academic readiness, and emotional maturity.
According to the examination body, the age requirement is designed to ensure that students possess the cognitive and emotional capacity needed to cope with the demands of higher education. JAMB stressed that admitting candidates below the approved age could negatively affect their academic performance and overall development.
The Board explained that the policy aligns with Nigeria's education laws and admission guidelines, adding that it is not intended to deny qualified students access to higher education but to ensure they are adequately prepared for university life.
JAMB further noted that while some exceptionally gifted students may demonstrate academic excellence at an early age, admission policies are formulated to serve the broader interest of the education system and maintain uniform standards nationwide.
The Board urged parents, schools, and candidates to comply with the stipulated admission age and avoid practices aimed at circumventing established regulations. It also reiterated its commitment to ensuring a transparent, fair, and merit-based admission process for all eligible candidates.
