Mozambique’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Verónica Macamo, made a strong statement: “Everything that was looted from Africa must be returned.” Her comment reflects the growing pan-African movement calling for the restitution of cultural and historical artifacts taken during the colonial era.
Nigeria is among the most affected countries, especially with the famous Benin Bronzes and other sacred objects looted by British colonizers in the late 1800s. These treasures remain on display in major European institutions such as the British Museum and German ethnographic collections.
In 2022, Germany returned several Benin artifacts to Nigeria, marking a major step in the effort to reclaim stolen African heritage. Nigeria’s government and cultural authorities have since intensified negotiations with France, Belgium, and other countries to recover more looted treasures.
Macamo’s statement reinforces a united African diplomatic push, and Nigeria plays a leading role in the cause. Officials emphasize that returning these items is not merely symbolic—it is about restoring national identity and correcting historical injustice.
