LAGOS — Academic and non-academic staff of Lagos State University (LASU) have commenced an indefinite strike action, citing poor welfare conditions and unresolved issues with the university management.

The industrial action, which began on Thursday, was declared by the joint unions representing both teaching and non-teaching employees after several attempts at dialogue reportedly failed to yield results.

According to union leaders, the decision to down tools follows prolonged dissatisfaction with unmet demands, including issues related to salary arrears, promotion stagnation, lack of proper staff welfare packages, and non-implementation of previously agreed resolutions.

Staff members were seen abandoning their duties as lectures and administrative services ground to a halt across the Ojo campus and other satellite centres of the institution.

The leadership of the staff unions stressed that the strike will remain in force until all demands are satisfactorily addressed by the LASU administration.

Efforts by Nigeria TV Info to reach the university's management for comments were unsuccessful as of the time of this report. However, students have begun expressing concerns over the likely impact of the industrial action on their academic calendar.

This development adds to the growing list of industrial disputes within Nigeria’s higher education sector, further highlighting the need for improved dialogue between government institutions and academic stakeholders.
